Exterior painters in Auckland
Before we quote an exterior repaint, we look at the condition of the walls, the parts you want painted and how we’ll reach them. The preparation and access are part of the conversation from the start.

Decide what you want painted
“Paint the outside” can mean different things. We go through the exterior with you so the quote makes clear which walls, joinery and details are included.
Exterior walls
The wall material and existing paint both matter. Weatherboards, rendered walls and painted masonry need preparation and coatings suited to the surface.
Doors & window frames
Decide which painted doors, frames and trims are part of the job. Detailed joinery takes time to prepare, and its condition needs checking before repainting.
Fascia, soffits & other details
The boards and surfaces around the roof edge are easy to overlook when planning a repaint. We can discuss these with the walls so the scope is clear.
Planning to repaint the roof too? Roof painting is a separate service and should be identified separately in your quote.

The old paint tells us where to start
We look beyond the colour. Paint lifting around a frame, exposed timber and powdery surfaces can each need different preparation. This is work to allow for in the quote.
- Paint that’s coming away
- Loose or failing coatings need attention before the new paint goes on. The condition of the existing layers determines how much removal and sanding is required.
- Timber or moisture problems
- Soft timber, ongoing damp and recurring stains need their cause dealt with. We discuss repairs that need to happen before the painting can continue.
- A clean, sound surface
- The preparation includes appropriate cleaning, treatment and priming for the surface. Drying time is allowed for before the next stage.
Any additional repairs or preparation outside the agreed scope are discussed before that work goes ahead.
Plan the work around the house
A high gable, a narrow side path or a deck below the wall can all change how a job is set up. We talk about these details early, along with doors you need to use and areas that need to stay accessible.
Agree the job
Confirm the painted surfaces, preparation, colours and access arrangements. We discuss the order of work and any dates you need us to plan around.
Set up and prepare
Protect nearby areas, arrange access and carry out the agreed surface preparation. Any repairs needed before painting are addressed or discussed with you.
Paint in suitable conditions
Apply the chosen primer and finishing coats as specified for the surface, with the required drying time. Weather conditions help determine when this work can proceed.
Check the work together
Look over the painted areas, check the details and tidy the work area. We also discuss looking after the coating once the repaint is complete.
How much does exterior painting cost in Auckland?
The cost of exterior house painting depends on the area, surface condition, access and what’s included. Floor area on its own doesn’t tell us how much preparation or working access the house needs.
An easy-to-reach wall with sound paint is a different job from a high wall with several failing layers. A useful quote accounts for that difference.
When you compare quotes, check the preparation, painted surfaces, access costs and GST. Those details tell you whether you’re comparing the same work.
What affects the price?
- Preparation and repairs
- How much cleaning, coating removal, sanding and priming the surfaces need.
- Height and access
- The equipment and working arrangements needed to reach each painted area.
- The parts being painted
- Walls only, or doors, frames, fascia and soffits as well.
- Coatings and colour changes
- The primer and finishing coats required for the material, existing coating and new colour.
Questions before you book
If there’s something specific about your house, call us and talk it through.
0800 118 844Does exterior painting include scaffolding?
Access is assessed for the house. If scaffolding or other equipment is needed, the quote should state how it will be arranged and whether the cost is included. Ask about this before accepting a price.
Does all the old paint need to come off?
Not always. Sound, well-adhered paint may be suitable to prepare and repaint. Loose or failing layers need dealing with first. We assess the existing coating and explain the preparation proposed for your house.
What happens if it rains during the job?
Painting is planned around the conditions required by the product. Rain or damp surfaces can interrupt work and extend the timeframe. We discuss scheduling changes with you and allow the surfaces and coatings the drying time they need.
Can we live in the house while the outside is painted?
Usually, the main issues are access and the areas being worked on. Tell us which doors, paths and outdoor spaces you need to use. We can discuss the work sequence and any restrictions before starting.
Can you paint over damaged weatherboards?
Timber needs to be sound before it is painted. Rotten boards or ongoing moisture problems require attention first. We’ll discuss any areas needing repair and what is included in the painting scope.
How long will the exterior paint last?
There isn’t one lifespan for every house. Surface condition, preparation, coating choice, exposure and maintenance all affect how the finish wears. Once the paint is chosen, we can discuss the manufacturer’s care advice and what to watch for.
Is roof painting part of an exterior house repaint?
The roof is included only if it is specifically quoted. Let us know if you want both the walls and roof done, so each part of the work is identified. See our roof painting service.
